The role of the Phantom has evolved over the years, in one sense influenced by the film starring Gerard Butler. A friend of mine played the role on stage for many years in Germany. When he tried to return to the role some time later, he was told he was not "the Phantom type." This was the first he'd heard of it. Though he's a good-looking man, he's not tall, he's not particularly young, and his portrayal probably lacked the element of overt sex that was suddenly a requirement.
At the end of the show, four Phantoms were brought out on stage. The only one I really knew was Colm Wilkinson. There was a young man on the end, very handsome, and I thought, If this guy is playing the Phantom, who the heck is playing Raoul? I mean, I would have taken off with this guy in a second. I should add that Michael Crawford made an appearance but was unable to sing anything but the last note of Music of the Night, which was done by the ensemble, because he is also performing Wizard of Oz and had to save his voice.
We come now to the music itself. To be fair, Lloyd Webber has written some glorious tunes, no question. He's ripped off some good ones as well. I suggest you check out youtube and put Andrew Lloyd Webber Plagarist in the search box and listen to the first video that comes up. You'll be astonished. Who knew he listened to so much Pink Floyd.

Today I watched this in the 2018 version and I was crazy, the fires were real, the flash bangs ruined my hearings and my eyes, the show was beautiful In so many different ways. I think the 2004 version corrupted me. I keep comparing this to Gerald Butler's. This guy definitely has a better voice being a professional or whatever, but it doesn't have the seducing quality of Butler. Butler's version makes the butterflies in my stomach go wild. This one doesn't, but Ramin can get his voice to get pretty high for a dude and I respect him for that. The dramatic hand movements make me cringe too. That's just me though. No offense or anything.

Hate me, but ramin is positively awful. my least favorite phantom.

Remember in the story, he's been teaching her to sing from the shadows for several years prior to him appearing behind her dressing room mirror. This is her first time seeing him and she's trying to decide if he is indeed an angel sent by her dad or something else. Hence the scene where Sierra seems to be searching his face (another commenter noticed her switching between his eyes) for some detail that might give her the answer. The pair have almost a musical argument as they try to make sense of one another. In the final verse of the song, he's challenging her to sing for a couple of reasons; 1 he's trying to goad her competitive side kind of like saying Show me what you've got! and 2 he wants to hear her voice (notice how Ramin clenches his fist as if he could capture her voice? because he wants to own her voice in the same way one might own a piece of fine jewelry. All in all, LOVE this performance.
